The Importance of Business Firewalls

The Importance of Business Firewalls

A business firewall is an instance-specific or entire network proxy, firewall, or gateway system that protects a computer running a specific application. Business firewalls are used by companies and organizations to prevent unauthorized access to databases, servers, and external networks while allowing connections necessary for the operating systems and applications they host. A business firewall can protect against malware (viruses, worms), phishing attacks, ransomware (cryptolockers), and other online threats. They can also assist in improving security at different layers of the organization.

As cybercrime gets more sophisticated, so must corporate security measures.

  1. A business firewall will protect your company from unnecessary intrusion from the outside, such as hackers or viruses.
  • Firewalls will allow you to have full control over all incoming and outgoing traffic on your network. You can choose what comes in and what goes out, allowing you a greater level of overall security.

What are some things a proxy server or firewall can do for my organization?

A business firewall, from companies like SonicWall firewalls, can be used to deny access to an entire network while still allowing specific applications or services to be accessed. A proxy server can also control access within individual applications and websites by intercepting unauthorized attempts to access any databases or connected systems within the application.

For example, most companies have to maintain compliance with security standards and regulations, such as HIPAA. A business firewall can be used to protect the company from unauthorized access to data by using a secure internal network with firewalls.

Firewalls can also be used to control what types of applications are allowed access when a user connects to the network by using a corporate account. Think of this as controlling which lock screen you are presented with when you connect to the network, which application is running on your computer, or which website you are accessing.

Enforce Security Policies

Firewalls can also be used to enforce a security policy by defining which applications and websites are allowed or not allowed to the particular user. For example, you may want your employees to connect to the intranet but not access public websites during working hours. Firewalls allow you full control over what users have access to what accounts.

Block Certain File Types

A firewall can also be used as a tool for blocking a certain type of file or application from being mounted. For example, if an employee uses an external storage device such as an external hard drive to store confidential files, the firewall can block access to those files when the system is locked down with only administrative rights available.

Protect Company Servers

A business firewall is used to protect a company’s servers, data, and other internal resources from unauthorized access by hackers, viruses, or other cyber-attacks. A firewall may also help reduce the risk of damage caused by malicious software (malware) or phishing websites designed to steal confidential information.

A business firewall provides security for sensitive network resources such as servers and databases. A business firewall also allows companies to institute network-level policies that control what applications are allowed through the firewall and how they get access to data on company networks – in effect creating a more secure environment in which the company’s assets are protected.
