How to Educate Your Employees with Security in Mind 01

There are different ways in which you can educate your employees to keep your business safe and secure. Obviously, you can put on a training course yourself to raise awareness. However, you may find it much more beneficial for your business and the knowledge that you are hoping your employees will learn to get experts to provide the teaching for you.

Help them understand the threats

When dealing with cybersecurity, it is important that your employees understand the threats that can be made upon them and how they can come to be the target of these threats.

Cybercriminals have many different ways of catching the unwary out. They can be subtle in their attacks, as cybercriminals are cunning and pervasive. It is important that when your employees are using passwords they do not use information that can be easily gleaned from their social media profiles or any other easily guessed information.

They must understand the consequences

It is also very important that your employees are taught about the consequences of any security breach to your business and the loss of data. Not only in the impact it will have on your business but also in how it could very well affect them and your customers alike.

By providing a window into what could potentially happen, you will find that they may take a little bit more care and provide a bit more attention than if they assume that any breach would not affect them in any way at all.

How threats can happen

Although there are many ways in which a cybercriminal can gain access to a business and the data it holds, it is more than likely to come from a naïve contact within the company. Phishing emails, for instance, can be hard to spot, especially if you are under immense pressure to hit deadlines or do not pay attention to detail.

However, this is not the only way you can be targeted. Indeed, you could very well fall foul of ransomware. This is where the cybercriminal will encrypt data and will not allow access (or will threaten to post the information publicly) unless a ransom is paid to them. What to do should they be a target

You should educate your employees on what they should do if they find themselves a target of cybercrime regardless of whether it is within the workplace or within their private lives.

This is because it is not just businesses that are targeted; indeed, there are many people that are scammed out of their life’s savings by cybercriminals acting in many different ways from utility providers, fictitious bank accounts, pension scams as well as those that get close to their victims, playing on the heart strings and then swindling them out of their money for their own greed.

To sum it up

It pays to have your employees educated in the art of spotting cybercrime attacks, not only for your business’s benefit but for theirs too. Being taught what is actually at risk, what the cybercriminals are after, how they are likely to be contacted, and what to do should they find that they have fallen for a scam, whether at work or in their private lives, is all information that should be given to keep your business and those that work in it safe at all times.
